“That’s Not Our Show”: ‘Chicago P.D.’ Star Addresses the Burzek Wedding Controversy

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) wedding happened in Chicago P.D. Season 12. Despite a buildup lasting over a decade, the season finale rushed through the wedding without much fanfare, to the point where there were no vows. Many viewers were disappointed by how everything unfolded. Deadline caught up with Squerciati at the ATX TV Festival, where she discussed what went down. “People definitely wanted more after waiting 12 years,” the actress told the outlet, highlighting the significance of the wedding. “But that’s not our show,” she added. Chicago P.D.‘s tone is not wedding-friendly, which was the biggest challenge. “Unless there was, like, a bloody gown, then, I don’t know. I think we would be less happy. At least I had a moment to be pretty,” Squerciati said.

The episode felt like a sleight-of-hand where, despite being named “Vows,” it had none. “We didn’t film vows or anything,” the actress said, corroborating showrunner Gwen Sigan’s comments. “I think that was a big thing that people got upset about, that it was never a speaking wedding, which is, I think, how they sort of bridge the gap with not making it too twee. But there were never vows. And I think because it was called “Vows,” people thought [there would be].” Squerciati added. Speaking about the wedding and the lack of vows, Sigan told TV Insider:

“We thought a lot about writing the vows for sure. I think as we were going through the process of sort of putting all these storylines together, you have this very high-stake situation for Voight (Jason Beghe), for the full team. In so many ways, this is really a Voight episode, and so to also want to marry it with this wedding was tricky, and we wanted the right tone. We wanted to juxtapose the best we could this really emotional ending in Chapman (Sara Bues) and Voight and this cost, and then also have this happiness and the promise of more to come and the reason why Voight took the actions he took, to see all of that happiness and at the same time, you’re seeing this heartbreak.”

The show is set to return for Season 13, which finds the team dealing with the world post-Reid. “I think a lot of them are [going to be looking at the job differently]. I definitely think Burgess [will approach the job differently.] For her, she had a lot to do with all of this, but she was really just trying to have someone’s back. She was just trying to have her teammate’s back, and so to see the consequences of it, I think it will have an effect on how she moves forward,” the showrunner teased. How will that affect her relationship with the team?
