The Handmaid’s Tale’s Offred Spared Serena For All The Wrong Reasons, Fans Believe
Sometimes it’s useful to be a little selfish.
The Handmaid’s Tale is definitely not the show to watch if you’ve lost all hope in humanity because chances are you won’t be able to get it back. Depicting a dystopian but very realistic future, the show raises many questions about the morality of those who give life and those who can take it.
Although the show follows a clear protagonist and antagonist, there are no good guys or bad guys. In fact, The Handmaid’s Tale does a great job of showing the duality of everyone and how gray people really are.
However, with each passing season, viewers have accumulated a hatred for those who end up in positions of power.
Serena Joy Waterford, the wife of Commander Fred Waterford, is one of those characters you’ll probably learn to hate. So is June Osborne, also known as Offred, who was used by Serena to conceive a child and forced to give that child up.
What viewers didn’t expect was that Offred would be surprisingly forgiving of Serena, even though she had all the power to kill her. Upon further reflection, however, it’s easy to see that June didn’t do it out of the goodness of her heart. Instead, she did it to prove that goodness.
In one of the show’s most powerful moments, June tells Serena that she’s a better Christian than she is. Today, fans are inclined to believe that behind the Christianity mentioned in a statement is a full spectrum of human qualities that June is desperate to prove she’s better at.
Being better at forgiveness is one of those qualities that June not only wants to show Serena, but also to prove herself. Without being able to forgive, she will never be able to mentally leave the mental prison of Gilead.
Technically, saving Serena was more of an act of selfishness than an act of true kindness on June’s part, but it may have led to more problems that we’ll have to explore in The Handmaid’s Tale’s upcoming season 6. Stay tuned to not miss any updates!
