The Rookie Season 6’s Lucy Twist Spells Big Trouble For Chenford

A new development in The Rookie season 6 indicates that trouble may be on the horizon for Tim and Lucy’s relationship in future episodes.

Lucy Chen finally took the detective’s exam in The Rookie season 6, episode 3, and the twisted outcome indicates that hardships are in store for Lucy’s relationship with Tim Bradford. The ABC procedural drama television series began teasing Tim and Lucy’s romance from the beginning (even if the writers weren’t aware they were doing so at first), and the couple finally got together in the middle of season 5. Since then, Tim and Lucy, known by fans as “Chenford,” have gotten into a couple of fights, but their spats have never gotten to the point that either were considering ending the relationship.

The premiere of The Rookie season 6 ended with Tim and Lucy in a disagreement concerning her taking the detective’s exam. She believed he wasn’t supportive enough of her career path (and was purposefully sabotaging her), while he was upset that she would think he didn’t have her back. Tim and Lucy cleared the air (and even told each other “I love you” for the first time) the following hour, which was also The Rookie’s 100th episode. However, after episode 3’s disappointing outcome regarding Lucy’s test, Chenford may be in trouble as season 6 continues.

Lucy Performed Poorly On The Detective’s Exam In The Rookie Season 6

Lucy finally took the detective’s exam in The Rookie season 6, episode 3, and her suspicions that one person would sabotage her chances of passing came true. Although she seemingly performed well during the oral part of the test, Lucy ultimately scored low (17th, to be exact), making her chances of becoming a detective slim. As many will recall, Lucy’s successful attempt to pull off a “five-player trade” to get Tim a spot on Metro earned her some enemies, one of whom helps conduct the detective’s exam. He is undoubtedly part of the reason why Lucy did poorly.

It would be out of character for Lucy to roll over and die following the disheartening twist at the end of The Rookie season 6, episode 3.

Of course, Lucy was disappointed with her low placement following the test (which was scheduled sooner than expected at the last minute). Tim was there to comfort his girlfriend, though, and he even gave her a trophy that read “17th Place” on it (it initially said “1st Place,” but he etched a “7” on it). Nevertheless, knowing Lucy and her tendency to be stubborn (and resilient), this won’t conclude her pursuit of becoming a detective. The Rookie has been foreshadowing Lucy failing the test since season 5, so this result was expected, but it won’t stop her from achieving her goal.

Lucy Likely Won’t Give Up On Pursuing Undercover Work (Much To Tim’s Dismay)

It would be out of character for Lucy to roll over and die following the disheartening twist at the end of The Rookie season 6, episode 3. The LAPD officer will likely be discouraged, but she has been through much worse since she first became a cop. Future episodes will probably feature Lucy still attempting to become a detective, which would, in turn, help her pursue more undercover work (something she has been passionate about for multiple seasons). Consequently, Lucy’s relentless attempts may lead to problems for Chenford in The Rookie.

Perhaps Tim felt some relief after Lucy performed poorly on that detective’s exam.

Tim was previously married to Isabel, a detective who became addicted to drugs while undercover, leading to a divorce prior to the pilot of T he Rookie. So, Lucy’s desire to pursue an undercover career has been a source of contention in her relationship with Tim. Tim has never outright said that he didn’t want Lucy to become a full-time undercover cop, but it obviously concerns him due to his past with Isabel. As a result, if Lucy continues to relentlessly attempt to become a detective to do more undercover work, season 6 may feature more disputes between Tim and Lucy.

The Rookie Season 6 Has Foreshadowed Tension In Chenford’s Relationship

As mentioned above, The Rookie season 6, episode 1, concluded with a Chenford fight. Tim let Lucy take the lead at a crime scene earlier in the hour so that she could practice for the detective’s exam, but he noticed a problem that she didn’t, leading to the scene becoming contaminated. Lucy later accused Tim of not supporting her dream because he was afraid of what happened to Isabel happening to Lucy. Tim vehemently denied that he was sabotaging her, but a lie detector test in episode 2 revealed that he was unconsciously worried about Lucy becoming a detective.

Tim and Lucy seemingly made up, and he was even sympathetic towards her low placement in episode 3. However, one cannot deny that the first two episodes of the season seemingly foreshadowed a rift in Tim and Lucy’s relationship concerning her wanting to do more undercover work. Perhaps Tim felt some relief after Lucy performed poorly on that detective’s exam, and if she continues pursuing this path, he might be bothered by her relentless endeavor. Consequently, it might be safe to theorize trouble in Chenford’s relationship in The Rookie season 6.
