‘Yellowjackets’ Director Karyn Kusama And Co-Creator Ashley Lyle Tease Plans For Season Three

The first season of Yellowjackets debuted on Showtime in November of 2021. The second season premiered in March of 2023. Before the second season even aired, the series was renewed for a third season.
Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, work for season three has been halted. However, the director of Yellowjackets Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) as well as the co-creator Ashley Lyle (Narcos, Dispatches from Elsewhere) have teased some of their plans for the third season.

According to Comicbook.com, Kusama spoke about Yellowjackets on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast. During this podcast, she stated, “I’ve been so excited by this. The concept of that immediate aftermath of re-entry into the world, to me, there’s a whole season worth of material there.”

Kusama continued, “And the fact that this is such a long game that each of these characters is facing, in terms of reorienting themselves to whatever normalcy is supposed to be. I’m sure we’re going to learn that their normal is a lot different than our normal. There’s a lot that needs to be figured out between Season 2 and Season 3.”

As Comicbook.com notes, Lyle has also spoken about the potential storylines for season three. She explained, “Are we gonna get weirder? Probably!”

Lyle also thanked the fans of the series, stating, “In short, making a show is wild. It can be thrilling and sometimes heartbreaking. And as an obsessive tv watcher myself, I know that being a fan is weirdly similar. Just know how grateful we are for everyone who spent their valuable time with us. If it brought you joy, or made you laugh, or think, or cry, or just provided a respite from real life, that makes all the craziness feel worthwhile. All we can do is tell the story we needed to tell. Here’s to S3, hive. BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ.”

Set in 1996, Yellowjackets revolves around a group of high schoolers on the girls’ soccer team who become stranded in the wilderness when their plane crashes in Canada. They each must do whatever it takes to survive and maintain their sanity.

While fans of the series await season three, the first and second seasons of Yellowjackets can be streamed on Showtime.
