“You’ll See Some of It”: ‘Chicago P.D.’ Showrunner Teases Voight & Chapman’s Romance in Season 12 Finale

The Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale will be a romantic ending to a special season. The show, during its multi-season run, has thrown up a number of romances, including a somewhat unexpected romance between Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Nina Chapman (Sara Bues). The police procedural drama introduced Chapman as Illinois’ Assistant State Attorney in Season 9 and in the seasons which have followed, the pair have gotten closer and closer. Fast-forward to Season 12, Episode 4, the attorney opened up to Sergeant Voight about her feelings towards him. Their romance plot has since taken a backseat in recent episodes, but there is set to be movement in the right direction in the Season 12 finale.

While Chapman might be feeling the blues, Voight hasn’t exactly caught the fever yet. Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan, while speaking with ScreenRant, discussed how the show might address this romance plot. Since returning from her trip, Chapman has joined forces with Voight in his quest to take down Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy). In their recent collaborations, the question of romance has been artfully sidestepped, but tonight’s season finale will address it. “Yeah, definitely. You’ll see some of it in the finale,” Sigan explains to the outlet. “I think it’s really intertwined with the Reid story. The way that we set out to work on the finale was definitely to have Chapman sort of be this angel on his shoulder, and be this more ethical, more moral person that he could rely on.”

Viewers familiar with the Chicago P.D. will be very aware of how Voight solves his cases. Good old police work and some lawbreaking sprinkled in. These are the character traits that have made audiences come to love Voight, but they are exactly the same reason Chief Reid has been able to trap Voight and Intelligence. Sigan explains that Chapman will look to temper Voight’s darker instincts as he pursues Reid.

“She is really trying to get Voight to a place of, “Let me help you, let me do this the right way. There are still options for us.” And that also is interwoven into this idea of how Chapman’s been very honest about her feelings for him.”

The Voight-Chapman Relationship Might Hit a Break Point in ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 12 Finale

Ultimately, the Season 12 finale will bring about a conclusion, one way or another. For starters, the much-anticipated Burzek wedding will see Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Burgess (Marina Squerciati) finally go through with their nuptials. Reid’s takedown will be a highly enjoyable aspect of the finale should it materialize as well. Sigan goes on to explain that Voight-Chapman’s romantic interaction might be arriving at a break point in the finale episode, saying:

“She’s also aware that he, perhaps, isn’t the most capable of having relationships in the way that she might want, but there does reach a point for everybody where, if you’re giving, giving, what are you getting back in return? And so we see some of that in their relationship in the finale. They don’t really have a line right now, and do they need one? And where is it going to go? So we’ll answer some of that in the finale.”
