Young Picard: Patrick Stewart On Who Can Play Jean-Luc In Possible Star Trek TNG Prequel

Patrick Stewart suggests who can play young Jean-Luc Picard if a Star Trek: The Next Generation prequel ever happens.

If a prequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation requiring a younger actor to play Jean-Luc Picard is ever made, Sir Patrick Stewart offers his suggestion for the iconic role. Coming off the widely acclaimed Star Trek: Picard season 3, which is the final season of the Paramount+ series, Stewart is now promoting his long-awaited memoir, “Making It So.” Sir Patrick’s autobiography covers his life story and his illustrious career on stage and screen, including his experiences in the X-Men and Star Trek franchises.

Patrick Stewart was interviewed by Wired about his new memoir, “Making It So,” and the legendary actor was asked how he feels about the possibility of Paramount one day doing a prequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation about Jean-Luc Picard as a young Starfleet Officer. Read Stewart’s response below:

It will happen, I’m sure. I mean, I already have a son. And who knows what’s going to happen to him. He could become the next Jean-Luc, and he’s a wonderful actor.

Patrick Stewart’s Son & His Star Trek: TNG Connection

Patrick Stewart’s son, Daniel Stewart, co-starred in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, “The Inner Light,” which Sir Patrick told Wired is his favorite episode of TNG. Daniel played Batai, the son of Kamin, played by Patrick Stewart when Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s mind was transferred to live through the life of a resident of the dead world Kataan. While Daniel has already played the son of a Patrick Stewart character in Star Trek, Daniel is now 56 years old, and he wouldn’t be able to play Jean-Luc Picard as a young Starfleet Officer pre-TNG.

IDW recently launched “Star Trek: Picard’s Academy” about young Jean-Luc (with hair) in his Starfleet Academy years, which could be the basis of a Star Trek: TNG prequel if Paramount decides to make one. David Tristan Birkin and Marcus Nash played younger versions of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but that was also over 30 years ago. Dylan Von Halle played Jean-Luc as a young boy in Star Trek: Picard season 2’s flashbacks, and of course, Tom Hardy played Shinzon, Picard’s evil younger clone in Star Trek: Nemesis while Ed Speleers played Jack Crusher, Jean-Luc Picard’s son in Star Trek: Picard season 3. If a Star Trek: The Next Generation prequel ever does happen, it’s likely a new actor would be chosen to step into the iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard.
