Devastating Reason The Witcher S4 May Be Hard to Watch (No, Not Cavill’s Absence)
The Witcher season 3 has broken our hearts on so many levels, and Henry Cavill’s departure from the show is at the top of the list.
However, season 3 has also seen Freya Allan’s Ciri going toward a darker path – in the finale, the Cub of Cintra kills her human captor and joins the Rats, a bandit group, under the alias of Falka.
Ciri is the light that shines onto Geralt and Yennefer’s combined darkness. While The Witcher ’s universe paints most characters and their decisions gray, Ciri has always been one of the good guys.
In season 4, viewers might see a different side of Ciri, and there’s a good chance they won’t like it. The Rats aren’t exactly villains, they are just people who steal from the rich most of the time. Still, in Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, these bandits do not shy away from an occasional kill whenever they feel like it, so Ciri’s new pals might get her tangled up in some pretty questionable situations.
Fans believe Ciri might be leaning into her Falka alter ego next season, which might lead her to betray her core values and undo the character development that she’s had since The Witcher season 1.
Taking into account that Cavill has left Netflix’s series and will be replaced by The Hunger Games ’ Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia (and no one wants that), the show might not survive another big change, such as Ciri straying too far away from her inner goodness.
While that might be an interesting (and logical) path to take for the character, the writers will need to treat Ciri’s season 4 story arc very carefully. One wrong move, such as making Ciri do something ruthless and completely out of character right off the bat, and the audience will riot.
The Witcher has been subject to all kinds of controversy since the release of season 1, but the series has to tread lightly now more than ever, otherwise, there might not be a season 5 at all.
