Coronation Street star reveals key character is gay
Fan favourite DS Lisa Swain is soon set to hit our screens as a regular Coronation Street character, and actress Vicky Myers has revealed that she may or may not have her eye on someone, after confirming that the character is gay.
Lisa Swain has appeared in Corrie for a number of guest stints, but this time she is here to stay, with Vicky hoping that the show will explore more of her relationships away from her work as the local detective.
‘I think you’d be hard-pushed to find characters that she hasn’t either arrested or brought in for questioning or just had some kind of flippant or curt remark to,’ Vicky teased.
‘I think it would be really nice to see her out of her professional environment and to find out exactly who this woman is, what she’s like behind closed doors. Maybe in the future with new characters, perhaps, that are coming in, to find out exactly who she is, what makes her tick, why she is the way that she is.
‘To ask those questions – why is she a detective sergeant? Has she never wanted to get promoted? What is her home life like? What’s the dynamic there? I’m interested in that, very much so.’
Over the years, DS Swain has been involved in solving some of Weatherfield’s biggest crimes, including serial killer Stephen Reid’s (Todd Boyce) murders.
However, it was during her involvement with Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) after her rape ordeal that we got to see below the surface of DS Swain, in scenes that projected her passion for women’s safety and rights.
‘She mentioned one time in the story with Amy involving non-consensual sex about how she’s passionate about violence against women,’ Vicky reminded us.
In upcoming scenes she is set to be involved in the case surrounding Lauren Bolton’s (Cait Fitton) disappearance, but we may also see a more personal side to Swain, including a possible romance, though her family life may get in the way of tha.
‘Relationship-wise with her we know she has a daughter, a teenage daughter.
‘Also – I’m not entirely sure if everybody knows this – she’s gay. I think she perhaps has seen somebody that’s caught her eye but at the moment she’s far too busy with focusing on this investigation and her career and being a single mum and juggling her home life as well with her teenage daughter.
‘If anybody out there has got teenage daughters they can quite well understand what I’m saying with that. Obviously to portray that with authenticity, to be creatively challenged by that, is brilliant and I’m very thankful to be given this opportunity.’
