ITV Coronation Street star drops Gail Platt bombshell ahead of soap exit
Coronation Street star John Thomson appeared on This Morning to talk about his return to the cobbles as Jesse Chadwick, teasing Gail Platt’s exit storyline
Coronation Street star John Thomson appeared on Friday’s This Morning to talk about returning as Jesse Chadwick.
The actor, 55, talked about his return to the cobbles after 15 years and teased details about Gail Platt’s upcoming exit. The character of Jesse has made a comeback in the midst of Gail’s exit storyline, with actress Helen Worth bidding farewell to the ITV soap after 50 years.
Shockwaves were sent through Coronation Street recently when Gail experienced a harrowing heart attack amidst a family dispute concerning Jesse, as Gail’s children don’t trust him.
Discussing upcoming twists and turns on Friday’s This Morning, John excitingly revealed: “Gail is leaving, yeah! So what happens is, I visit Gail in hospital and she’s post cardiac arrest, it’s her second heart attack, and I’m allowed to say this… Gail proposes to me!
“I think it’s a Leap Year, isn’t it? Gail proposes to me but that’s why… I can’t say anymore but she’s heavily medicated so I don’t know if her intentions are true!”
It comes as Gail’s daughter Sarah Platt, played by Tina O’Brien, suspected Jesse of nicking her former flame Damon Hay’s (Ciaran Griffiths) stashed cash. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, the actual culprit turned out to be Sarah’s brother David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), reports the Liverpool Echo.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that actress Helen, 73, known for her role as Gail in Coronation Street, is set to leave the show after an impressive five decades.
While the exact storyline that will see Gail depart from the soap remains under wraps, show bosses have hinted at a highly “emotional” exit befitting of such an important character. Helen’s final scenes are expected to air towards the end of this year.
Reflecting on her decision to leave, Helen shared earlier this year: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
