ITV Coronation Street stars reveal Rovers Return secrets after ‘legend’ update
Coronation Street stars Jack P Shepherd, Ben Price and Colson Smith have been opening up about their time on the cobbles and have revealed what is really in those Rovers Return glasses
Coronation Street favourites Jack P Shepherd, Ben Price, and Colson Smith have been sharing behind-the-scenes secrets from the show, including what’s really in the pints pulled at the Rovers Return. Known for their roles as David Platt, Nick Tilsley, and PC Craig Tinker, the trio also run a podcast titled ‘On The Sofa’, where they discuss life, work, and more.
Originally named the Sofa Cinema Club due to their varied film preferences, the podcast’s synopsis reads: “A friendship formed on those famous cobbles, join Colson Smith, Jack P. Shepherd and Ben Price ‘On The Sofa’, as the Coronation Street stars chat about their lives, work and everything in-between.”
It continues: “Whatever they’ve been up to, and whatever they’ve been watching, these three best mates get together to share their unique insight into the world.”
In a recent snippet from the podcast posted on the On The Sofa Instagram account, the actors answer a listener’s question about what substitutes for beer and wine on set. Jack reveals: “The beer used to be, working in television in the 2000s, shandy bass. For me it was, or that Kaliber stuff.”
Ben chimes in with a bit of history: “Well, in the first iteration of Corrie in the Rovers, it was real. The taps in the Rovers had real beer in them but now…” Jack concludes: “It’s alcohol-free beer.”, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Colson revealed: “You’ll opt for the bottle of beer, won’t you? Which you’ll have sparkling water put in.”
Jack replied: “Wine’s different. White wine’s usually apple juice and your red wine is usually like a blackcurrant.”
Ben added his own experience: “I served a red wine today and it was a non-alcoholic red wine in the Bistro for the old dudes.”
This follows Ben’s previous revelation about an actor on the cobbles who had a unique method for appearing intoxicated during filming. He shared: “I can let you into a little secret here, because I’ve done a lot of scenes with Peter Barlow [played by Chris Gascoyne], when he was playing drunk, and Nick would help him in and out of pubs and out of very dangerous situations.”
“We’d get into long dialogues and he would spin around before the take, and make himself dizzy.”
The actor further explained: “He’d then enter the scene dizzy and stagger around. It was a wonderful portrayal of drunk, but he was just dizzy.”
This comes after Ben and Colson announced that Jack had been named a ‘Corrie legend’ following the cast’s photo day earlier this month.
It has been a decade since the entire cast, including the show’s young soap stars and on-screen pets, posed together for a picture. The last reported group photo was taken in 2014 to commemorate the show’s move to the then-brand-new MediaCity set.
Discussing the day on his podcast, Ben shared: “You get front row, that’s your legends and you’ve had that for ages. That’s 60-odd years. Then you get your second row which is not so legend but been in a bit and then you get the bun fight. We get onto the street, I’m first on the street and I walk up and I see names on back of chairs.”
