Netflix’s The Witcher Season 4 Will Reportedly Explain Henry Cavill’s Recast Through Expanded ‘Storyteller’ Plot

The Witcher season 4 will commemorate a big and new chapter in the Netflix show’s fantasy saga as it sets its sights once again on the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire later this year. The change comes as the Geralt of Rivia that fans knew and loved will be swapping swords with Liam Hemsworth as the white wolf since Henry Cavill’s sad departure in season 3. Now, it’s reported that the series’ showrunners have opted to include an explanation of Cavill’s exit in season 4, which will involve a storyline from the books.

Thankfully, faithful fans of the series who might feel a bit lost without Cavill will still have familiar faces to look forward to seeing in The Witcher season 4, like Joey Batey as Jaskier, Meng’er Zhang as Milva, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and, of course, Freya Allan as Ciri. However, some new faces will also prove pretty exciting as its fourth installment will see stars such as The Matrix‘s Laurence Fishburne, who plays Emiel Regis, and Sharlto Copley as Leo Bonhart.

The Witcher Season 4’s Storyline Will Explain Geralt’s Recast in the Final Season

According to the ever-knowing Witcher hub at Redanian Intelligence, The Witcher TV show’s showrunner, Lauren S. Hissrich, has found a way to explain Henry Cavill’s recasting through plot details in Season 4. Redanian’s report states that The Witcher season 4’s return will weave in Cavill’s departure through the characters Nimue and Stribog, who will be introduced to the show from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. Nimue, played by Eve Ridley, is a young girl who is alive 100 years after Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer have passed away and, since the threesome have since become legends, Nimue looks to learn more about them. Stribog, a wandering storyteller, comes to Nimue’s village looking for food and, in exchange for a meal, tells the tale of the legendary White Wolf.

“Season 4 of The Witcher will open with Stribog telling one of these stories to Nimue and other kids,” states Redanian. “The kids keep interrupting him with other versions of the story they heard. Meanwhile, we get a montage. Geralt fights Vilgefortz with each cut having some slight differences. Once he’s in his black shirt as seen in Season 3, other times he fights the same fight in his Season 2 armor, and so on.” However, fans of the show aren’t too happy, yet again, with the changes The Witcher season 4 is making in the reported flashbacks. Under Redanian’s Twitter/X post, one fan expressed their frustration, saying, “I’m very confused as to why they are “explaining” this to begin with. Normally, when there is a recast, life goes on, no need to do anything convoluted to “explain” it. We’re not idiots,” while another said, “I don’t think this sounds good. I’d prefer if they continued it without any explanation.”

The Witcher has a huge following due to Sapkowski’s popular books, which were published between 1991 and 2012, as well as CD Projekt Red’s video games of the series, but this news doesn’t seem to have settled well at all, as fans already feel hard done by regarding the show’s changes from its source material where storylines have already been cut for the adaptation. Filming of The Witcher season 4 was finalized in October 2024, and although there isn’t a confirmed release date as yet, the show is expected to be released in the second half of 2025.
