‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Christopher Meloni breaks silence on his miserable life

‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Christopher Meloni reflects on his life and how he entered entertainment world

Christopher Meloni recently opened up about the kind of miserable life he was living before landing Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit.

For those unaware, the 65-year-old American actor played Elliot Stabler in the American police procedural crime drama television series created by Dick Wolf for NBC, which concluded its season 27 on May 28, 2026.

During his appearance on the Thanks Dad with Ego Nwodim podcast, Meloni reflected on his time working as a bouncer at a “little dive bar down on Bleecker Street.”

He told Nwodim that he was earning just “$40 a night as a bouncer,” which is peanuts as compared to $5,500, which he made filming his first commercial.

The turning point in his life was the moment when he escaped death, as he was nearly crushed by a car.

After proving his acting skills in television commercials, Meloni secured the role of the hotheaded son of a Mafia don in the 1996 thriller film Bound. During the same time, he was also portraying criminal Jimmy Liery in eight episodes of NYPD Blue.

In 1999, he got a chance to play Julia Roberts’ fiancé, Bob Kelly, in 1999 romantic comedy film Runaway Bride.

It is pertinent to mention that Christopher Meloni joined Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit in 1999 and stayed with the franchise until 2011.
