Giancarlo Esposito Up for Playing Moff Gideon Again in the Mandalorian Season 4
Giancarlo Esposito is up for playing Moff Gideon again in The Mandalorian Season 4, though admitted he has no idea where the story is going.
Speaking to The Wrap, Esposito made clear he’s eager to play the big bad once more in The Mandalorian if showrunner Jon Favreau wants him.
His return would definitely prove a talking point for Star Wars fans since Din Djarin and his Mandalorian crew have defeated the Moff in every season so far. He was shot down from a TIE-Fighter in Season 1, locked away for good in Season 2, and seemingly died when an Imperial Cruiser landed on top of him in a fiery wreckage in Season 3.
But Esposito suggested returning from inevitable death is part of the fun. “I know nothing about Season 4. [Jon] hasn’t tipped his hat to me,” he said. “So many fans are like, ‘you were a clone, right?’ It could be. I trust Jon knows what he’s doing. I would love to keep dying and coming back. That’d be my favourite thing of all. There are a lot of ways to go and I’m open to whatever they have in play.”
Gideon being a clone is one popular fan theory that would allow for his return, given the Moff was seen experimenting with the technology in Season 3 in scenes that created a link to the Sequel Trilogy.
Disney is yet to renew The Mandalorian for Season 4 officially but its production team hasn’t been subtle about the show’s return, with executive producer Rick Famuyiwa most recently saying that it’s “certainly coming”.
Favreau also said he was writing the script way back in May 2022, before Season 3 had even premiered, and confirmed it was finished in February. There’s also a chance Din Djarin and Grogu show up in upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka, as this takes place alongside The Mandalorian and other “Mandoverse” show The Book of Boba Fett.
