After Amazon Cancellation, The Wheel of Time Petition to Save the Show Reaches Major Milestone

A lot of people were disappointed when the fantasy television series The Wheel of Time was canceled after three seasons. Now, a fan-led effort to save the show has reached a major milestone.

As noted by the official SaveWOT website, a petition to bring the fan-favorite fantasy series has amassed over 152,000 signatures. The site not only hosts the official petition for the campaign, but evidence of the series’ success via a set of review scores from various aggregators, all of which place The Wheel of Time well above the average scores for similar series such as House of the Dragon Season 2, The Witcher Season 3, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2.

Based on Robert Jordan’s long-running novel series of the same name (which was completed by Brandon Sanderson following Jordan’s passing in 2007), The Wheel of Time premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021. Upon its release, it received rave reviews from critics and audiences.

The series follows Rosamund Pike’s Moirain Damodred, a powerful mage known as a channeler who is tasked with seeking out four youngsters, one of whom is the reincarnation of the legendary Dragon, the only one who can drive back the powers of the Dark One who threatens the entire universe.

Alongside Pike, The Wheel of Time features a sprawling ensemble cast led by Josha Stradowskias Rand al’Thor, a young shepherd, and the actual Dragon Reborn, Fares Fares as the right-hand of the Dark One, Ishamael, and Shohreh Aghdashloo in the role of Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, the chief advisor to Olivia Williams’ Queen Morgase.

The stars’ performances have been hailed as a high-point of the series, as has its direction, cinematography, and astonishing visual and special effects. At the time of writing, The Wheel of Time holds an 88% “Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 130 critical scores. In spite of this, the show canceled in May.

The Wheel of Time Should Make A Comeback

Following the release of The Wheel of Time Season 3, and prior to the series’ cancelation, showrunner Rafe Judkins opened up about why the series ended up on Prime Video while talking about its future. “I think one reason we went with Amazon, because we had options of who was going to buy the series when we first went out with it, is that Amazon felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term.”

“There’s not a lot of places doing that anymore.” Judkings continued, “For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave. The books get better as they go, and the show is getting better as it goes. I think we can continue that arc if we’re allowed to continue. I think it’s important for television. It’s what we do best and so we should be finishing these stories.”
