Chilling details from Mariska Hargitay’s life were revealed at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where her documentary, My Mom Jayne, was screened!

Mariska Hargitay found worldwide fame and acclaim for her role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Though not in the public eye for much, she had a pretty rough life behind the scenes.

However, at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Hargitay decided to throw off the curtains and reveal what her life had been like for quite a while. Mariska Hargitay revealed it all in her documentary, My Mom Jayne, from divulging the truth about her birth father to talking about what it was like growing up without a mother.

But before the big reveal about her mother’s life, Hargitay revealed that the father who raised her wasn’t her actual biological father. The actress revealed that she had struggled with the truth for 30 years, and her actual father is an Italian man named Nelson Sardelli.

After this confession, Hargitay went on to talk about her mother, Jayne Mansfield, who unfortunately died in a car accident when Hargitay was just 3 years old. According to People, Mansfield had been sitting in the backseat until she went to the front at the time of impact.

Mansfield moved up to the passenger seat alongside her lawyer and boyfriend, Sam Brody, who was also killed in the car accident. If she had stayed in the back (where Mariska Hargitay was), she could have been alive.

After the accident, rescuers failed to spot Mariska Hargitay in the backseat, who was lodged under the seat after sustaining a head injury. It was only after her brother noted that she was missing that they went back to the wreckage to rescue her.

More chilling details of the Hargitay family emerged

Accidents happen, but the probability of dying from a car crash still stays low compared to dying due to natural causes. In the Hargitay family, however, it seemed that history had a way of repeating itself.

As the documentary continued, fans got to know about the life that Hargitay had been living behind closed curtains. From confronting who her father was to rummaging through the wreckage, Hargitay had suffered a lot.

The chilling part of this tale came when the report stated that Jayne Mansfield’s father had also died in a very similar manner! When Jayne Mansfield was 3 years old, her father had also died in a car accident, much like Hargitay, who was also 3 years old when Jayne Mansfield met her fate.

My Mom Jayne was Hargitay’s directorial debut and was nominated for the L’Œil d’or Award (for best documentary at Cannes). Naturally, fans praised the actress for the bravery that she had shown all along.
