Christopher Meloni Reveals His Ideal Ending for His, Mariska Hargitay’s Law & Order: SVU Characters

Law & Order: Organized Crime’s Christopher Meloni shared his dream scenario for his character Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson ending.
The end of Benson and Stabler doesn’t have to be especially heinous.
Indeed, when the time comes, Christoper Meloni who plays Det. Elliot Stabler in the Law & Order franchise opposite Mariska Hargitay’s Capt. Olivia Benson wants the former SVU partners’ ending to be something special.
“Some conclusion to Benson and Stabler,” Christopher told People in an interview published Nov. 8. “I think both characters, Stabler and Benson, should ride off into the sunset.”
Fans were first introduced to Benson and Stabler when the long-running procedural drama premiered in 1999. Since, fans have longed for some kind of romance between the pair—especially after Meloni’s character returned to the Law & Order fold in 2021, leading the Organized Crime spinoff on Peacock beyond occasional SVU appearances, following his departure in 2011.
“For Benson and Stabler to get together, it’s hard! Hard,” Christopher quipped about the idea of the pair having a romantic relationship,” noting that there is an element of their friendship that makes things “sexy.”
“How well they know each other in kind of an upspoken way,” the Oz alum shared. “I think it’s the dept of their friendship. And you know, they’ve made these stabs with these attempts of making this thing another thing.”
As for reconnecting onscreen after over a decade of being apart, Christopher credits his and Mariska’s offscreen friendship for making his transition back to the Law & Order universe seamless.
“It’s a very unique feeling when we get together because it’s echoes and remembrances of what we once were,” he told People. “What we are now and no one else can bridge that gap or has that journey or has that connection.”
