Coronation Street’s Jane Hazlegrove ‘upset’ as she declares love for co-star
The actress was among those to send messages to Peter Ash as his final scenes in the ITV soap aired
Coronation Street star Jane Hazlegrove was seen getting ‘upset’ as she shared a message to her former co-star. The actress was among those to send messages to Peter Ash as his final scenes in the ITV soap aired.
The actor bowed out of the show after six years following his character’s heartbreaking Motor Neurone Disease (MND) diagnosis. The former builder was told he had the life-limiting illness in April 2023.
And 17 months on, in heart-wrenching scenes in Monday night’s Corrie (September 9), Paul died after his health took a sudden turn for the worse and he was left struggling to breathe.
But in a heartbreaking twist, Billy was unable to say goodbye after a series of events, that started with him looking for his lost phone, delayed his efforts to get there. However, he did think he got to tell Paul how he felt over the phone.
In reality, Paul had already tragically passed. Summer Spellman, Bernie Winter and Gemma Winter-Brown are now keeping the secret as they prepare to say goodbye to Paul.
Following Peter’s last scenes, Corrie shared a goodbye video with Peter but as he was speaking to the camera from the Victoria Gardens set, the soap star was met with a lovely surprise from co-star and on-screen partner Daniel Brocklebank (Billy Mayhew) and Summer Spellman actress Harriet Bibby.
But in another surprise, Peter was sent messages from a few other familiar faces including on-screen mum Jane. Standing on the famous cobbles outside the Rovers Return, the actress said: “Peter, I’ve been asked to say a few words about you, so what am I going to say, darling?”
She continued: “It’s been an absolute pleasure watching you work, watching you be so fastidious – your attention to detail is extraordinary and everything that you’ve done with Paul, you should be incredibly proud of yourself because I just feel incredibly lucky to have worked with you for this amount of time..
“Even if you are quite rude to me and even if you do take the mickey out of me on a daily basis. I’m going to miss you son, I’m going to miss you so much. You hold your head high because you’re extraordinary. I love you all the world, Peter Ash.”
She then rounded off the video as she fought tears, saying: “I’m getting upset now,” before waving at the camera and walking out of shot.”
