Fans Still Not Over Wednesday Wasting Gwendoline Christie
Is it possible for the beloved character to make a comeback in the next season?
The first season of the Wednesday series received an exceptionally warm reception, becoming the second-most watched Netflix original series on the platform prior to its release and debuting at #1 on the streaming service in 83 countries. Featuring an amazing cast, the show quickly earned the love of viewers around the world.
Aside from the titular Wednesday Addams, brought to life by Jenna Ortega, one of the most intriguing characters was principal Larissa Weems, portrayed by Gwendoline Christie ( best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones series). Sophisticated and collected, Larissa was passionate about Nevermore Academy and devoted all of her time to the faculty and students. Watching her rather complicated relationship with Wednesday and Morticia was extremely compelling. Therefore, her eventual fate was heartbreaking for most fans (warning: spoilers ahead).
In the final Chapter VIII, she is stabbed in the neck with a needle filled with nightshade poison. Afterwards, Larissa collapses to the ground, presumably dead. She is not seen again for the rest of the episode, nor is her funeral shown, so her status remains a mystery for now.
So is it possible that Gwendoline will return in the upcoming second season?
Considering the amount of love fans have shown for her character, there can be a chance. After all, there is no concrete evidence that Larissa is gone for good, and as many viewers know, it is unusual for beloved characters to disappear so abruptly (at least not in this kind of show). But what if she really is dead? In that case, there are several possibilities.
First, given Wednesday’s psychic abilities, Larissa could appear as part of the visions, guiding her ex-student or providing clues. Second, her earlier years at Nevermore Academy could be explored further in flashbacks or even a sudden spin-off (which would hardly be a surprise after the show’s runaway success).
Nevertheless, the backlash from fans was inevitable, leading to frustrated comments about how no other actor would replace Gwendoline due to her “overwhelming on-screen chemistry with Jenna,” and some even going so far as to downgrade the show’s overall rating as a result.
The second season of Wednesday has already been approved, so hopefully fans will soon get the answers they so desperately seek.
