Five Years Later, Vampire Diaries Fans Still Can’t Get Over Caroline And Klaus

There’s a reason Klaroline, as fans called Klaus and Caroline, is still a highlight of Vampire Diaries for followers.

The world may move on to the next big thing, but Vampire Diaries conversations and debates go on forever, just like the TV show’s characters’ centuies-long lives.

One of the most debated conversations in the fandom is surrounding the relationship between Klaus, played by Joseph Morgan, and Caroline, played by Candice King. Their relationship had an arc of “Enemies to Lovers” – a fan favorite trope.

While Klaus Mikaelson was an aggressive and hostile antagonist, Caroline Forbes brought out his soft and empathetic side, which pleased the audience.

The Beginning Of Klaus and Caroline Saga

The dynamics between Caroline And Klaus were teased in season two of The Vampire Diaries, but only gained momentum from the third season of the show.

Caroline met Klaus on her birthday through her then-boyfriend Tyler who was compelled to hurt her. Klaus then reached out to Caroline to nurse her and apologise for Tyler’s mistake, saying that it wasn’t personal and that she was just collateral damage.

Later, Klaus helped her become a fully formed vampire and kick-started the beginning of their epic saga.

Viewers Say Klaus And Caroline Have A Forever Kind Of Love

Throughout the seasons, Klaus continued to show genuine affection and attraction for Caroline, and it only kept growing much to the delight of the fans. Klaus also professed that he wanted to show Caroline the world and believed she would let him do so one day.

Klaus said on the night of Caroline’s graduation, “He [Tyler] was your first love. I intend to be your last.” Later, when Klaus asks her to be honest with him about her feelings toward him, Caroline accepts that they have a connection.

After their confessions, he promises that he will walk away and never return and offers her to come to find him in the future whenever she is ready.

Several years later, when Caroline goes to New Orleans seeking help from Klaus, she is devastated to learn that Klaus hasn’t been seen in a long time.

When they cross paths a decade later in The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals, Caroline tells him that the only reason she went looking for him straight away was that she knew deep down that he was never the villain in her story.

Fans Always Shipped Klaroline

When asked why they ship Klaroline, a fan said, “Because he drew her ponies and said something like “He may be your first love, but I intend to be your last.” And coming from such a hard a** villain, it was melt-worthy.”

Another fan states, “Also Caroline was the first one who “softened” Klaus and made him look more like “human” with feelings and heart. It was interesting to watch how he tried to charm her and how she tried to resist it.”

A fan goes on to compare Klaus’ relationship with Cami and Caroline, “Cami bought everything Klaus was selling hook, line, and sinker, when Klaus comes at Caroline with his fakery she literally laughs in his face and tosses it right back at him.”

They further say, “She calls out his game for what it is the moment he tries to play her and she refuses to play along. And this really speaks to the heart of what interests me about Klaroline as a relationship.”

Another fan says, “What makes Klaroline so special is that Klaus believes that Caroline is his equal. When you’re dealing with a character who is that powerful, then all of their relationships are going to be imbalanced by their nature. The belief in equality is the closest you could get to true equality.”

A fan comments on their on-screen chemistry, “I can’t even think of two other actors in any TV show today who can bring the level of romantic intensity that the two of them radiate in basically every scene they share.”

Candice King Never Bought Into Klaroline

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Julie Plec asked Candice King where she stood on Klaroline.

She said, “It’s so funny, I never understood it, like I knew but I was like ‘Oh this is fun like I loved working with Joseph Morgan, but it just took off in a way that I think even as the writers like you guys were, we were all surprised um it became it’s like only like a Twitter thing.”

Candice also added, “I loved that everyone kind of just got like little samples of it.. throughout you know the years um, but I liked the slow burn of Caroline and Stefan. Like when I watched TV, those are the kind of slow-burn relationships that… that I am usually rooting for, but I just thought it was so funny.”

“It’s still just everywhere it’s always Klaroline, Klaroline, Klaroline, all the time yeah, I hear that word a lot.”

It is safe to say that Klaroline is possibly the underrated ship on the show right after Delena and Steroline. While Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s off-screen relationship contributed a lot to the Delena ship, Klaroline’s romance took over many hearts. Because some cast members did date while working on the show, fans were hoping that Candice and Joseph might go the same way…
