‘It’s Gonna Be Fantastic’: Dave Filoni Teases Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie
Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer shares insights on Jon Favreau-directed Mandalorian & Grogu film.
Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni discusses his thoughts on the upcoming Mandalorian & Grogu film directed by Jon Favreau.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Filoni was questioned about the future of The Mandalorian’s television series. Filoni was hesitant to share details about The Mandalorian Season 4, and instead shared his thoughts on The Mandalorian & Grogu, revealing his excitement about the project and praising its director, Jon Favreau, discussing his confidence in Favreau’s creative abilities and describing the filmmaker as someone who’s “well-studied” in Star Wars.
Filoni stated, “I’m excited about what we’re doing right now, but the movie, I think, is gonna be great. With Jon at the helm, it’s gonna be fantastic, and he’s so well-studied in Star Wars now, so he’s got a great shorthand and I love collaborating with him. Just excited to share the future of what we’re doing.”
The Mandalorian Season 4 Is Still Reportedly Happening
Due to Lucasfilm’s policy of preserving professional secrecy until projects are released, specific details about the upcoming Mandalorian film and a potential fourth season have proven hard to access for the media and fans. According to Deadline, the upcoming big-screen adventure won’t substitute for Season 4 as a new set of episodes is still in the works. With the movie slated for production later this year, the prospect of a Season 4 in the near future seems unlikely. However, there’s speculation that The Mandalorian might shift its focus from Din Djarin to Katee Sackhoff’s character Bo-Katan Kryze.
Dave Filoni is set to direct a crossover film set during The New Republic era, integrating elements from The Mandalorian, Star Wars: Ahsoka, and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. Filoni opened up about the creative approach to the film, stating, “The way I look at it, there are [small] stories, and then there’s the big story of the day, too. A New Hope, Empire and Return Of The Jedi tell the important parts of the tale that really define the history of the period. There are all kinds of sub-stories underneath that. We’ve been building all these small stories.”
Filoni continued, “If the Disney+ series have allowed time to establish these characters and the New Republic era they inhabit, the movie is all about creating a bigger picture. “To me, a theatrical experience has to have a big idea – a monumental moment in the time period that changes what’s happening,” says Filoni. “What Tony [Gilroy] has done [in Andor] and what we did in Rebels, everything then changes when Luke blows up the Death Star. You’re looking for those moments that define an era, and that’s what the films really should be about – whether it’s characters coming together, or a defining moment.”
