ITV Coronation Street Gail Platt’s exit storyline ‘revealed’ as fate confirmed
Helen Worth is leaving her role as Gail Platt on ITV soap Coronation Street after a whopping 50 years on the cobbles and she is filming her final scenes on Wednesday
Coronation Street icon Gail Platt’s fate has been confirmed ahead of her exit from the cobbles.
It was announced earlier this year that Gail star Helen Worth, 73, is leaving her role after a huge five decades and some iconic scenes on the cobbles.
Details of what the storyline will be that leads to Gail leaving the soap after decades on screen have not been confirmed, but bosses have teased that it will be “emotional” and will no doubt be a fitting departure for a soap legend.
Helen will depart in scenes at the end of this year and is filming her final episode today (Wednesday 30 October). Only recently on the cobbles, Gail suffered a terrifying heart attack as her family rowed over returning love interest Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson).
Talking about the storyline on Wednesday’s This Morning, soap expert Sharon Marshall said of Gail’s exit: “It’s unbelievable isn’t it, 50 years and the last scenes are being filmed today. It is the end of an era!
“No Gail-sized coffin is being delivered to the set today, she’s definitely leaving alive as I know she’s been having her heart attacks and stuff. The question is going to be, is she leaving as a single woman or married to Jesse?
“She proposed, he accepted, but there’s all this stuff going on with gangsters and stolen money. Surely after five husbands, one of who was a serial killer, bodies under her annexe, being the mother of David Platt, they’ve got to give her a little bit of happiness in the end?”
Speaking of her decision to bow out, Helen said earlier this year: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
