ITV Coronation Street star Vicki Myers’ devastating cancer battle as she issues warning
Coronation Street actress Vicky Myers’ career took a turn as she was diagnosed with cancer.
Coronation Street newcomer Vicky Myers has become a firm favourite, portraying DS Swain with a no-nonsense attitude.
Her journey to Weatherfield was not without its challenges; a decade ago, Vicky faced personal turmoil with the end of her marriage and a cancer diagnosis after doctors discovered a malignant melanoma.
After a gruelling period of treatment and reconstructive surgery, she managed to get back into the audition circuit. However, by 2013, the relentless cycle of rejections and the financial strain of being a single mother took its toll, leading her to take a two-year hiatus from acting to work in an office at a casting agency.”
But I never gave up on my dream of being an actor,” Vicky insists. “There were times when it was really hard and there were days when I said, ‘I just can’t do it, it isn’t practical.’ But I always believed in myself and knew that it would happen one day I never lost sight of that.”
Speaking about her future plans, she said: “My only plan for the New Year is work. I’m incredibly happy and I’d like it to stay that way.
“It hasn’t been easy, but that was my path and I think that’s what makes me appreciate it all the more. Take those experiences and learn what you can – take the positives from it, not just the negative.”The cancer diagnosis was horrible, but it’s important not to trip over something you’ve left behind. Just keep going, keep moving forward.”
After nearly three decades of working as an actress and facing financial struggles, Coronation Street’s Vicky Myers decided to indulge herself when she secured a permanent role on the popular soap as Detective Lisa Swain. However, her choice of treat was far from extravagant.
“It’s really boring, but I treated myself to a new vacuum cleaner,” she told OK! with a laugh. “People might get a nice bottle of champagne, or go out for a meal, but my old vacuum was driving me mad, so I bought a Henry. “I know what it’s like to struggle with money, so I’m pretty frugal.
“You never know when a job is going to come to an end, so I stayed practical. At least my carpets and the inside of my car are clean now – it’s a great piece of equipment, with lots of different nozzles. No-one can tell me I’m not living it up!”Vicky’s on-screen life is set to take a dramatic turn over the New Year as her character’s romance with factory boss Carla Connor intensifies.
The pair, who have been getting closer, were publicly declared an item by Carla (played by Alison King) just before Christmas. However, in a New Year’s Eve twist at the Rovers Return, Carla’s confession of love catches Lisa off guard. “It absolutely floors Lisa,” reveals Vicky. “She’s just come in from work and goes to the Rovers to ring in the New Year.
“It takes her by surprise and she doesn’t return the sentiment. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel the same way, I just think she’s not quite ready. This is a massive step for her.”
