The Handmaid’s Tale: The Only Redemption Arc for Serena Fans Will Accept

This may be the best redemption arc with no actual redemption.

If there is one character who is hated by all and sundry in The Handmaid’s Tale fandom, it has to be Serena Joy. Formerly at the very top of Gilead’s hierarchy, she was also one of those who worked on its general principles and made many women’s lives a living hell.

From stealing newborns to being an accomplice to actual rape, Serena has committed many inexcusable crimes. And there’s no way she can end the series by just running away without paying for all the pain she’s caused.

However, the general direction of the series suggests that this is exactly what will happen to her. After giving birth to her own child, Serena is offered help by June, and many viewers believe that this will be played out as a turning point for her character.

By allowing Serena to escape, The Handmaid’s Tale would end up showing compassion to all women who have been victimized by Gilead in one way or another. On the other hand, not everyone agrees with this decision.

What some Reddit fans think would be the best solution is to see true remorse from Serena Joy, who not only helps tear down the Republic, but also turns to justice to pay for everything she’s done herself. If Serena is as intelligent and compassionate as the writers suggest, she wouldn’t want a life hiding from her past crimes.

Instead, she would have enough dignity to give up her own life or freedom to serve as an example to anyone who wants to build a manipulative and controlling government ever again. As unlikely as that may be, fans’ hopes are still alive.

Whether you think Serena will be made to pay for her crimes in an upcoming final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, or miraculously escape justice once again, you’ll have to tune in to find out what happens. Keep an eye out for more The Handmaid’s Tale news and behind-the-scenes updates to make sure you don’t miss a release date announcement.
