‘The Mandalorian’ director claims to know Boba Fett’s future, giving hope to ‘Star Wars’ fans that he has one
Nobody’s seen Star Wars bounty hunter Boba Fett since the conclusion of Disney Plus’ 2021 series The Book of Boba Fett, but director Robert Rodriguez says he knows what’s next for the grumpy guy under the Mandalorian armor. And he’s not telling.
Known for shooting action strictly on smaller budgets, Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City) had a fancier set of toys to play with when he directed The Mandalorian Season 2 episode “The Tragedy.” That particular chapter saw the surprise return of Fett, who had three or four lines in the original trilogy and seemingly died in Return of the Jedi. Yet, everyone decided Fett was just too cool to be tossed aside, so various (“non-canonical,” Disney reminds) comic books and novels written through the years prophesized Fett’s return from the belly of the Sarlacc.
Following the second season of The Mandalorian, Disney released The Book of Boba Fett, with Rodriguez directing several episodes. The series explains how Fett escaped his fate and sought to take over the late Jabba the Hutt’s territory. Reactions to The Book of Boba Fett were mixed, and Star Wars fans worried that Fett’s somewhat inglorious curtain call would be the last time they’d see the character.
Luckily, that’s not the case, according to Rodriguez. In an interview with Gizmodo, Rodriguez said, “I can’t say. I’m sworn to secrecy,” adding, “I wish I could tell you. I know all the answers to what you’re asking.” Must be nice, Rodriguez. What the director could say, though, is that he loves working on Star Wars. “The sets were so real,” he said. “To get to direct and edit and be part of the Star Wars universe just as an experience is one of my favorite experiences because it was just a dream come true.”
If you squint, you’ll notice that Rodriguez spoke in past tense about directing Star Wars, leading people with too much time on their hands to surmise that wherever Fett is appearing next, it’s not a project directed by Rodriguez. But truthfully, the bounty hunter could show up anywhere: Ahsoka Season 1, The Mandalorian Season 4, or perhaps another season of The Book of Boba Fett if Disney is feeling brave.
He’s probably not in the second season of Andor (though Fett is alive during that time), and he’s definitely not in The Acolyte, which takes place a hundred years before his time. And then there are the upcoming Star Wars films, which could certainly find a place for Fett. What a state of woe to have too much Star Wars and not enough Boba Fett.
