It looks like the story of Din Djarin and Grogu will end up in a feature film. But do the fans want it?
Not that fans of A Galaxy Far, Far Away have always blindly followed every decision made at Lucasfilm, even before Disney took over the company. But now, with the sale of George Lucas’ studio, the company’s policies are being criticized even more loudly.
Most of the problems with the current state of Star Wars stem in large part from Disney’s own questionable business model. Its emphasis on an abundance of serialized content not only leads to fatigue for industry workers and audiences alike, but also to rash decisions regarding the release of feature-length films.
For example, the next Star Wars movie may turn out to be a sequel to The Mandalorian. Only the fans are not too excited.
The Mandalorian May Continue as a Feature Film
It was originally thought that the next feature-length installment in the Star Wars universe would be a movie, continuing the story of Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker (oops, we meant Palpatine; or is it Skywalker? You decide). The other movie is James Mangold’s project, which will be a prequel not only to the main events, but also to the history of the Jedi Order as a whole.
However, the new update suggests that before we see these two, another one will hit the big screens first. Looks like Disney didn’t make enough money with the Grogu merchandise.
‘A couple of months ago I shot this one down, that there were rumours that Season 4 of The Mandalorian could be turned into a movie,’ Jeff Sneider shared during his The Hot Mic podcast. ‘I think at the time I didn’t think that was necessarily the case. However, that is now what I am starting to hear. That the odds are in that projects favour, whatever Season 4 of The Mandalorian turns out to be, whoever is in it, what it turns out, whatever shape it takes, it is looking like that could be the next Star Wars movie and that might be the thing that’s announced before the end of the year.’
Is This the Right Financial Decision for Disney?
During the Star Wars Celebration in London, a movie was announced that would cover the entire ‘Filoni-verse’ and be its final chapter. While fans knew they were in for one final story to wrap up the Mandalorian and Ahsoka, it was expected that the film would follow at least the second season of Ahsoka.
If the movie will not only continue the story of Din Djarin, Grogu, Bo-Katan, and the other Mandalorians, but will also be the conclusion of the story that began with The Clone Wars, then fans should clearly be concerned.
So many characters and their personal arcs have been spanned over the course of The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka — will Filoni be able to fit so many storylines into just one movie?
Or are we in for another third season of The Mandalorian, which not only completely shifted the focus to the new characters, but also seemed to forget the original direction of the series?
Moreover, Disney and Lucasfilm are in a dire situation when it comes to the audience’s reluctance to go to the movies. First, after the Star Wars sequels, the only warmly received full-length iteration was Rogue One, while Solo proved to be a box office failure due to fan boycotts.
Second, Disney’s policy of emphasizing content on Disney+ has led the company down a blind alley: How reasonable is it to expect that users of the streaming service who are familiar with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka are the same audience as moviegoers? Disney is taking quite a risk, as a new Star Wars movie could turn out to be another commercial failure.
