The Witcher Season 3 Trailer Sees Henry Cavill Take a Stand for the Final Time
Henry Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia for the last time in the latest trailer for The Witcher season three.
The ultimate battle begins in just three days’ time when the first part of The Witcher season three lands on Netflix. As teased by the latest trailer for the third season of The Witcher, Henry Cavill takes the lead for the final time in the hit Netflix show, as Geralt and Yennefer fight to keep Ciri safe as war brews on the Continent. Check out the latest trailer for The Witcher season three below.
“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” the official synopsis for season three of The Witcher reads. “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”
As the trailer once again reminds us, the third season of The Witcher will be split into parts, allowing fans of the show to enjoy watching Henry Cavill in the lead role for just a little while longer before he departs the adventures of Geralt and makes way for Independence Day: Resurgence and The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth to take the lead.
Henry Cavill Will Walk Away From the Witcher at the End of Season 3
Cavill, who has been arguably the most popular element of The Witcher since the show began back in 2019, suddenly took to social media in October last year to announce that he would be walking away from the Netflix series at the end of the third season. “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said to the shock of pretty much everyone. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
The reason why Cavill made this decision is still largely unknown, with some citing a pay dispute while others claimed it was due to creative issues. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich though is ready to move forward with a new actor. “I mean, we had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. (But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell,” she said earlier this year. “If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either. […] We’re all excited about Liam coming in. He’s got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it.”
