The Witcher star Joey Batey reveals huge book plot point will appear in season 4: ‘A fan-favourite moment’
The Witcher star Joey Batey has revealed that he’s especially looking forward to a certain storyline making its way in season 4, which he hinted could be a huge hit with book fans.
Last month, season 3 volume 2 of the fantasy series was released on Netflix, marking the final episodes featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia after four years in the lead role.
The next time the show returns to our screens, Liam Hemsworth will have taken over as the titular monster hunter, with Joey returning as the bard Jaskier alongside Anya Chalotra as sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg and Freya Allan as princess-turned-magical-warrior Ciri.
During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, Joey was asked what his hopes were for the fourth outing of the series, leading him to reference an important aspect of the books that he’s looking forward to portraying on screen.
‘I’m just glad that Jaskier’s still in it,’ he quipped, before adding: ‘There’s a thing called the hanza, which I’m looking forward to exploring. It’s a bit of a fan-favourite moment I think.’
The hanza could be extremely important for The Witcher going forward… and viewers have already met several of the characters who are a part of it.
Warning: spoilers for The Witcher season 3 and potential spoilers for season 4 ahead.
In The Witcher novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, Geralt’s hanza is a company of individuals who team up to find and rescue Ciri.
They are: Dandelion, Milva, Cahir, Regis and Angoulême.
If you’ve only watched the TV show and not read the books or played the video games, then some of these names might be familiar… and others less so.
Beginning with Dandelion, that name refers to the one and only fan-favourite Jaskier.
In Polish, the word ‘jaskier’ translates to mean buttercup, and of course, in the TV show, the character is known by the name Jaskier.
Next up is Milva, who made her entrance in the series in season three, played by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Meng’er Zhang.
Geralt meets talented archer Milva in season three volume two in the Brokilon forest where the dryads rule, even though she isn’t a dyrad herself. When he departs in search of Ciri, she joins him and Jaskier on the road.
Cahir has been somewhat of a complex character in The Witcher, portrayed by Eamon Farren, after appearing to be on the hunt for Ciri, but then revealing in the latest episodes that he wants to offer his services to her.
Both Regis and Angoulême are yet to appear in the TV show, with the former being a vampire who joins Geralt’s party.
Angoulême, on the other hand, is a fair-haired girl who bears some resemblance to Ciri, who was born into a rich Cintran family but left her upbringing to join a bandit gang called the Nightingales, before joining forces with the witcher.
So what do you think about the prospect of the fully-formed hanza appearing in season four, with Liam at the helm?
