Update: Temuera Morrison Claims He Was Originally in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4, Hasn’t Been Called for Movie
UPDATE: Screen Rant has shared additional information from the panel, where Temuera Morrison revealed he was actually supposed to be making an appearance in the fourth season of The Mandalorian that was originally planned, but he hasn’t yet been contacted about appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
“I understand they’re gonna do a Mando with Grogu movie next, and uh… things have changed a little too. There was going to be a Mando [season] 4, I think, and I was going to turn up in that, but as of now, I’m still waiting for a phone call, to be quite honest.”
It would seem that his role has been cut for time, considering roughly six hours of story had to be condensed into a two-hour movie. Filming has already begun on the production too, which would suggest that Boba Fett will not be appearing in the story.
It’s been a little while since we saw Temuera Morrison in a Star Wars story. After his return in The Mandalorian and his own flagship series The Book of Boba Fett, all signs pointed to Boba Fett playing a large role in the “MandoVerse” era of Star Wars storytelling. However, Morrison has been conspicuously absent from Star Wars media since his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Obi-Wan Kenobi and his voice appearance in Ahsoka.
It looks like he won’t be returning anytime soon, as he claimed at Fan Expo Chicago that he won’t be returning for The Mandalorian and Grogu. According to Screen Rant, which hosted the panel, he mentioned that not only has he not been asked to reprise the role of Boba Fett in the next Star Wars movie, but he hasn’t heard anything about a second season for The Book of Boba Fett either. There are no quotes to go on, surprisingly.
The Book of Boba Fett news is not hugely surprising. The series was released to a very mixed reception, with some of the series’ most popular episodes not even featuring Temuera Morrison. Morrison later admitted that he wished the show had done things differently. In a world where Disney is tightening the purse strings, they are likely reluctant to greenlight a costly second season that won’t get many views on Disney Plus.
It’s also possible that The Book of Boba Fett was always intended as a one-off limited series anyway, designed to get Boba Fett into place as Tatooine’s resident crime lord before whatever role he has in Dave Filoni’s “MandoVerse” crossover movie. At the very least, it seems plausible that he’ll return for that movie, which will presumably see Din Djarin and the Mandalorians plus Ahsoka and friends teaming up to stop Grand Admiral Thrawn with Fett’s help.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Lucasfilm has asked Temuera Morrison to lie about any possible involvement in a Star Wars project so they can keep it secret. Actors are increasingly being asked to lie about their involvement in Disney projects (particularly Marvel’s) nowadays, so if we’re being optimistic we might wonder if Morrison is telling the truth.
For now, though, it seems that Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are content with Boba Fett’s place in the Star Wars galaxy for now. Temuera Morrison will surely be back as Boba Fett eventually, just not anytime soon, unfortunately.
