Will ‘Chicago Fire’ Cliffhanger Change Severide’s Major Career Decision?

Before the major cliffhanger that left almost all of 51 in serious danger during a call in the Chicago Fire Season 14 finale, Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) had a major decision to make about his future.

Heading into the finale, Severide had a choice to make, just as all the roadblocks to his promotion to captain were cleared: continue with the CFD or take a job at OFI. Given his father’s (Treat Williams) history, his arson investigation skills and how much he uses them, that change could make sense. So, it became a matter of destiny vs. home for him.

As he contemplated just that, 51’s former battalion chief, Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), came to town at the fire rescue division’s request to convince him to stay with the CFD. Severide had assured him that OFI would be the only place he’d leave the CFD for. His wife, Lieutenant Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), pointed out that a transfer to OFI wouldn’t be the worst idea; it’s safer, plus, their foster son, Isaiah (Hero Hunter), wants to come back.

Ahead of the call that left almost all of 51 in a shocking cliffhanger, Severide told Pascal that he’d made up his mind.

However, we can’t help but think it’s very possible that Severide decided to move over to OFI only for whatever happens in that fire — it certainly feels like someone could die — to change his mind. We could easily see him deciding to stay at 51 to help everyone through their grief and any major changes that could result because of a death, especially if it’s one of the firefighters who has been there a long time. That could keep OFI in his future but have Severide remain part of the action at the CFD (while, of course, investigating some arson cases on the side). It does feel like for as long as the series is running and Taylor Kinney remains part of it, Severide will remain at 51.

But what do you think? What do you think Severide’s decision was in the finale, and do you think it will change because of the cliffhanger? Let us know in the comments section below.
