Coronation Street’s Joel teases villain’s downfall as he addresses soap future
Coronation Street actor Calum Lill, who plays Joel Deering, has addressed a future exit from the ITV soap after Joel’s secret was exposed to viewers on Thursday
Coronation Street’s Joel Deering actor Calum Lill has addressed his character’s big secret on the ITV soap, also hinting at his show future.
He was asked on Good Morning Britain about his character’s limited time on the soap, which he didn’t deny given Joel has been revealed as Lauren Bolton’s killer. After months of speculation, flashbacks revealed Joel was the character behind Lauren’s disappearance back in February.
Hope Stape had found missing Lauren’s necklace in Joel’s car as she cleaned it, and the guilt was written all over his face. We then saw flashbacks of the moment he attacked Lauren violently in her flat, before fleeing the scene and taking the necklace with him.
Whether it’s been in his car all this time remains to be told, but with Lauren’s loved ones wondering what had happened to the jewellery piece, Joel will need to ensure it’s not spotted by anyone else. Speaking about the big twist on GMB on Friday, actor Calum shared his “disappointment” as he confirmed at some point he would leave the soap.
Given the nature of the storyline and what Joel has done, host Ranvir Singh made it clear it was unlikely he would be sticking around once the truth comes out. Calum agreed with this, before teasing when he might bow out.
Asked about his character’s short shelf life, something he would have been told from the very start, he said: “It is [disappointing]. If you play a goodie you might be able to stay for ages, but playing a baddie, me and probably my mortgage provider are a bit disappointed.
“But it’s such a good opportunity, and it’s so fun and it’s the best gift I could have been given. The best thing about being here is the people, everyone is incredible. Whether he lasts a month or a year or longer, it’ll be amazing.”
Speaking prior to the interview, Calum addressed his character’s possible exit after the big reveal. He said: “I hope Joel’s very good at hiding because I really enjoy coming to work, but for soap justice I know that at some point he’s going to be found out.”
