Will Timothy Olyphant return as Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian & Grogu?
Will Timothy Olyphant return as Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian & Grogu? If he returns, what role could he play in the movie?
When we last saw Cobb Vanth, he was submerged in Boba Fett’s bacta tank after barely surviving a shootout with Boba’s arch nemesis, Cad Bane, in The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 7.
Though little is known of Cobb Vanth’s whereabouts in the aftermath of The Book of Boba Fett, it’s quite possible that he continued as the Marshal of Mos Pelgo (Freetown) after recovering from his injuries. At the end of the series, Boba seemed ready to move on from Tatooine, so perhaps Boba and Fennec could’ve left the planet, allowing Cobb Vanth to take over the throne as Daimyo of the territories of Mos Espa. Vanth is highly respected and trusted by the people of Mos Pelgo, and he’s the perfect guy to maintain law and order on Tatooine.
Of course, that’s all speculation, as we don’t know what became of Vanth after the conclusion of The Book of Boba Fett. However, Timothy Olyphant’s gunslinging character became so popular that most fans would love to see him back for The Mandalorian & Grogu.
So what role could Cobb Vanth play should he return in the Mando movie?
Cobb Vanth and Din Djarin became friends during The Mandalorian Season 2, so it’s been established that Vanth respects Djarin. This means the two could work together as Din resumes his work as a bounty hunter, this time for a bigger purpose. Cobb Vanth and Din Djarin could reunite if Din returned to Tatooine, as Din’s hunt for Imperial Remnants may lead him to the desert planet. In that case, Cobb Vanth could provide Din with crucial information on Imperial Remnant activity. Vanth may be suspicious of Imperial activity on Tatooine and decide to contact Mando, or Mando could come to Tatooine and run into ‘The Marshal’ himself.
If Jon Favreau decides to bring Cobb Vanth back, there’s a good chance he has an important role to play in the movie. Of course, that’s not to say Vanth couldn’t show up before The Mandalorian & Grogu or even after it. Tatooine is probably the most important planet in all of Star Wars and will continue to be integral to future Star Wars shows and movies, so don’t rule out a return of Vanth in Skeleton Crew, Dave Filoni’s Mandoverse crossover film, Ahsoka Season 2, or The Mandalorian & Grogu.
As for what Timothy Olyphant thinks, the actor didn’t rule out the possibility of Cobb Vanth’s return:
“If I had [talks with Filoni], I wouldn’t tell you.”
– Timothy Olyphant.
He also added that it’s a fun job and he’s always ready to come back for more:
“It was a ball working on those things and those guys know if they call me I’d show up. I don’t care if it’s a big giant thing or just to show up for an afternoon. It’s a fun gig.”
– Timothy Olyphant.
As Lucasfilm continues to play coy on who’s actually in The Mandalorian & Grogu, we can only speculate on whether we’ll see the Marshal of Freetown back. Our money’s on all of Mando’s friends and allies appearing at some point. Also, if Vanth does return, give the guy his own Mandalorian armor. He’s earned it.
