Hope for fans as yearned-for Coronation Street couple gets closer to getting it together
When Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) joined the cast of Coronation Street, all the attention was on her relationship with her mum Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) and how she would get on with Tyrone (Alan Halsall), the son who’d never known her as his mum.
But as Cassie has settled in to the Street, she’s found an unexpected niche in the Barlow family, and perhaps a place in the heart of Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) as well.
Following his break-up with Tracy (Kate Ford) and her subsequent departure for Spain, poor Steve was left at a bit of a loss. He tried dating apps and even a very misguided cocktail night with Ken (William Roache), but it was at a speed dating event that he found himself paired with Cassie, and the two got on surprisingly well.
When Ken had a fall and needed a carer, Cassie volunteered her services. The chalk-and-cheese pairing of people at different ends of the Weatherfield sophistication spectrum turned out much better than expected, with Ken really warming to Cassie and enjoying her company.
And there’s an undeniable spark between her and Steve, although as usual Steve has previously done his best to mess things up by asking Cassie out, only to dump her to go out with an ex instead.
In upcoming episodes Tracy is returning to Spain to be reunited with Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn). As she leaves for the airport she has a bit of advice for Steve. She tells him it’s obvious that Cassie fancies him, and he should go for it.
Steve is used to doing what Tracy tells him after long years of marriage to her – but will he take this piece of advice?
The build of Cassie/Steve is sort of a great spin on enemies to lovers, but they start as more of a Bickersons than enemies. That replicates his dynamic with Tracy, but Cassie is less hard and disdainful, more of a mate #Corrie

Many viewers are hoping so, with the Cassie/Steve pairing proving popular on social media. ‘Could Cassie Steve be a great match in #Corrie? I reckon so…’ @TVMMGeek said on X, while @ExtraUKTV said, ‘We Definitely Need More Steve & Cassie Scenes.’
MarkHarding reflected on why Cassie and Steve work so well as a couple: ‘The build of Cassie/Steve is sort of a great spin on enemies to lovers, but they start as more of a Bickersons than enemies. That replicates his dynamic with Tracy, but Cassie is less hard and disdainful, more of a mate.’
‘We NEED Cassie and Steve to get together, she’s the other half of comedy that he needs cause they’re hilarious together,’ said @TwellyWatcher. ‘She’s the yin to his yang hahah.’
