Mariska Hargitay Drops Major Announcement About Law & Order: SVU Season 27

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay shares a big update about the long-running procedural. The most resilient spinoff in the iconic franchise, Law & Order: SVU season 27 is just months away from debuting. Benson’s squad concluded the previous installment by tracking down a serial killer, and it’ll be heading into new episodes with some notable changes.

SVU vet Ice-T, who plays Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, also posted about the start of filming with a photo of his long-running Law & Order character. Fin first appeared in the procedural’s second season, and Ice-T has been with the cast ever since.

What This Means For SVU Season 27

There Will Be Some Shifts

The cast of Law & Order: SVU will look a little different, as Aimé Donna Kelly has been promoted to series regular. Kelly has recurred heavily on the show, first appearing in season 22 as Captain Renee Curry. Guesting on 29 episodes over the course of five seasons, Curry has assisted Benson in several important cases.

Along with Michele Fazekas becoming the new showrunner for season 23, making history as the first woman to hold that position in SVU‘s tenure, Kelli Giddish will be back full-time as Amanda Rollins. The fan-favorite is again a main cast member after her departure, a few seasons earlier, caused controversy. Although she still recurred occasionally, fans missed having her regular presence.

It’s Looking Bright

As is often the case, the Law & Order: SVU season 26 ending doesn’t do a lot to shed light on where the procedural is going in the long run. But with Rollins back and a new showrunner that could potentially bring a somewhat different focus to the story, there’s a chance that the NBC series will go back to what viewers connected with in those years after Stabler’s departure.

Law & Order: SVU season 27 doesn’t have a premiere date at NBCthough it is expected back by October at the latest. The premiere will give a better sense of what’s next for Benson, Stabler, and others.
