Season 27 of SVU kicked off with a heartbreaker after Benson and many members of the NYPD attended the memorial of their longtime Captain, Donald Cragen (Dann Florek). The disheartening event became a beacon for many SVU reunions, with Benson running into former squad members like former squad psychiatrist George Huang (B.D. Wong) and Benson’s ex-boyfriend, former Detective Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters), who all wanted to pay their respects to an NYPD legend. After decades of helping secure justice, SVU fans were heartbroken to bid farewell to Captain Cragen, who’d become a father figure to Benson over the years.
2. Elliot Stabler told Olivia Benson “love you”
Season 27, Episode 1 (“Dust in the Wind”)
Air date: September 25, 2025
While he historically hates funerals, Detective Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) wouldn’t have missed his former commanding officer’s memorial for the world, reuniting with Benson during Season 27’s premiere. As Benson made to leave the event, she ran into a stewing Stabler leaning against her car, struggling to head inside. Benson gave Stabler a much-needed pep talk after he began commiserating about the swift passage of time, reassuring him that they still had plenty of life ahead of them. Benson helped Stabler conjure the courage to attend the event, but before he bid farewell, he made sure to tell his former partner, “Love you.”
3. Sgt. Fin Tutuola was brutally attacked
Season 27, Episode 1 (“Dust in the Wind”)
Air date: September 25, 2025
As if SVU‘s Season 27 premiere wasn’t troubling enough, viewers everywhere were horrified after Sgt. Fin Tutuola (Ice T) was brutally attacked while heading home from Cragen’s memorial. After being tricked by two perps staging an assault, Fin was beaten, and his service weapon was stolen. While Fin survived his injuries, the incident took a toll on the SVU sergeant, who was forced to take a lengthy leave of absence. While Fin has returned to the squad room physically ready to rock, Benson had encouraged Fin to take his re-entry slowly to make sure he’s mentally back in action.
4. Detective Joe Velasco left the SVU to work for the DEA
Season 27, Episode 3 (“A Vicious Circle”)
Air date: October 9, 2025
The arrival of Benson’s new boss, Chief Tynan, has led to several precinct shake-ups this season, including the departure of longtime SVU asset, Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano). After Tynan caught wind of Velasco being hit up by the DEA for an undercover assignment in San Diego, she expedited the process over Benson’s head. While Velasco was annoyed about her boss’ bureaucratic plays, Benson wished him well in his new chapter as an undercover detective. Velasco briefly returned to the SVU fold in Season 27’s “Deep Under,” working with the squad while undercover to dismantle a sex trafficking ring.
5. Benson and her new boss got into a heated argument
Season 27, Episode 8 (“Showdown”)
Air date: November 20, 2025
From the moment Benson first met Tynan, it was clear that the Chief of Detectives isn’t used to not getting her way. After creating a new position within the NYPD with Benson specifically in mind, Tynan grew irritated after Benson turned it down to remain at the helm of the Manhattan SVU. Benson didn’t want to oversee numerous SVU squads; she wanted to connect with survivors where she felt she did the most good.
But as viewers saw in Season 27’s “Showdown,” Tynan is convinced the promotion is Benson’s best bet, criticizing the SVU captain’s ability to delegate and stay out of the frontlines. After Benson continued to turn down the promotion, Chief Tynan was obliged to remind Benson of her rank, but the Law & Order icon didn’t back down.
“Chief, I’ve been here for a very long time,” Benson said. “And I’ve seen administrators like you come and go. I know how to do my job, and I would like very much for us to work together and do something good for this city. But you don’t need to tell me how to do my job; what you need to do is stay out of my way.”
“That is not how this works,” Tynan reminded Benson gravely.
6. Detective Terry Bruno was nearly killed during SVU’s crossover with Law & Order
Season 27, Episode 9 (“Purity)
Air date: January 8, 2026
The latest crossover event between SVU and Law & Order was jam-packed with twists and turns, but one of the most insane moments occurred after the two units investigated an abandoned warehouse with a shed full of illegal contraband, firearms, and explosives. Just as the squads analyzed the mind-boggling arsenal, Detective Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane) alerted the investigators to a faint ticking noise. Benson instantly commanded the squads to evacuate immediately, with the impact of the subsequent explosion sending many of the fleeing detectives flying.
While most of the squad members were able to run away, Bruno was the last to leave, leading him to be struck in the torso by a piece of shrapnel. Bruno was whisked to the hospital, where he fortunately recovered from his injuries in enough time to see the perpetrators served justice. Make sure to kick this one off with Law & Order Season 25, Episode 9 (“Snowflakes”).
7. Rollins and Carisi were attacked after SVU villain Henry Mesner returned
Season 27, Episode 11 (“Career Psychopath”)
Air date: January 22, 2026
While Amanda Rollins and A.D.A. Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) celebrated their second anniversary in Season 27’s “Career Psychopath,” the night took a nightmarish turn after the couple arrived home from a romantic dinner to discover a home intruder. Rollins flew into action after Carisi was held at knife-point by a masked assailant, who eventually fled from authorities. Rollins and Carisi were rattled by the incident and eagerly curious to track down the perpetrator. Eventually, the squad’s investigation revealed several members of the justice system being targets of recent attacks, all connected to the nefarious SVU villain Henry Mesner (Ethan Cutkowsky).
The reckless psychopath and murderer has been causing headaches for Benson and the squad since he was a young boy, and despite his indefinite imprisonment, he escalated to pulling strings behind bars in his latest SVU pop-in. Rollins was able to track down Henry’s accomplice, but not before giving the longtime villain a piece of her mind.
8. Captain Renee Curry was transferred away from Benson’s squad
Season 27, Episode 15 (“Thirsty”)
Air date: March 12, 2026
Captain Renee Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) has been crushing it as a squad member, but her happy harmony was put in jeopardy during Season 27’s “Thirsty” after Chief Tynan extended the same promotion to Curry as she did to Benson. Knowing that this was some power play, and not wanting to be a pawn in Tynan’s game, Curry turned it down. Curry visited Benson to give her the heads up, revealing that after turning down the promotion, Tynan was reassigning Curry to become the executive officer at the 16th Precinct. Curry may be down the hall from her colleagues, but she is far from where she wants to be, which is helping survivors with her elite squad.
9. Chief Tynan asked Detective Jake Griffin to snoop on Benson
Season 27, Episode 16 (“Vivid”)
Air date: April 2, 2026
While Detective Griffin has proven himself to be a tenacious investigator, his arrival came under a shroud of mystery due to his longstanding connection to Chief Tynan. Griffin has been close to Tynan since childhood due to Tynan’s previous NYPD partnership with Griffin’s late father, Jimmy Griffin. Even on Griffin’s first day, he was keen to tell Benson that he wasn’t a spy for her boss, and it took some time to gain Benson’s trust. Soon enough, Griffin proved he had what it took to be a member of the elite unit, but as his childhood mentor began clashing with his SVU captain, he’s been feeling like the rope in an increasingly uncomfortable game of tug-of-war.
These tensions reached a fever pitch in Season 27’s “Vivid” once Benson realized Griffin was rummaging through the NYPD archives to scan her old cases. Benson confronted Griffin over the secrecy, telling him she suspected he was working for Tynan. But Griffin was panicked to set the record straight, handing Benson an incident report from 20 years prior concerning Tynan and his late father, Jimmy.
After catching rumors about his father and a shady shooting covered up by Tynan, Griffin grew tired of not knowing the truth. Griffin confirmed that Tynan had asked him to look into some of Benson’s old cases to scan for mistakes, but he’d only leveraged that as an opportunity to find the report from his father’s cover-up. With this rumor confirmed, Tynan doesn’t have as much power as she thinks she does, giving Benson a much-needed advantage that is bound to “blow everything up.”
