‘Law & Order: SVU’ Renewed for Season 28 at NBC

“Law & Order: SVU” has been renewed for Season 28 at NBC, Variety has learned.

As per usual, the renewal comes as little surprise, as the now flagship show in the “Law & Order” franchise continues to drive strong numbers for NBC even so late in its run. “Law & Order,” meanwhile, is still awaiting an official word on a renewal for next season, while “Law & Order: Organized Crime” was just canceled after five seasons.

Series mainstays Mariska Hargitay and Ice T remain with the cast of “SVU,” alongside Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane, and Aimé Donna Kelly. Dick Wolf executive produces along with Michele Fazekas, Hargitay, Kenneth Brown and Peter Jankowski. Fazekas returned to the show as its news showrunner at the start of Season 27. “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment under the latter’s overall deal with the studio.

Aside from “Law & Order,” the only shows awaiting word on new seasons are the dramas “Brilliant Minds” and “The Hunting Party” as well as the comedies “Stumble” and “The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.” “Brilliant Minds” is not looking primed to return, as NBC pulled the final six episodes of the season from the schedule back in February. It will return to finish out its second season in late May.

For the first time in years, NBC has also ordered several pilots in contention for the 2026-2027 broadcast season. Those include a reboot of “The Rockford Files” starring David Boreanaz and a PI comedy from Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici. Those pilots in particular are seen as strong contenders for series orders, so further cancellations ahead of the NBC upfront presentation in May seem likely.
