Coronation Street fans say ‘it’s not fair’ after Sally makes u-turn on Peter Barlow

Monday night’s episode saw Peter Barlow arrested on suspicion of murder over Stephen Reid’s death

Coronation Street viewers have been left complaining and saying ‘it’s not fair’ after Sally made a u-turn on Peter Barlow. Furious fans have slammed Sally Metcalfe, played by Sally Dynevor, after she ‘dropped Peter in it’ after he ran over and killed serial killer Stephen Reid, played by Todd Boyce.

Monday’s (October 16) episode of the ITV soap saw the factory worker interviewed by police after believing her partner Tim – who was attacked and left for dead by Stephen – had been killed. After Peter, played by Chris Gascoyne, went out in his cab to try find missing Tim, he eventually used the Street Cars radio to reach him.

Peter then alerted the police and Sally, with Tim eventually found and taken to hospital. But despite Peter’s efforts to help find Sally’s husband, she failed to defend him when questioned by police about Stephen’s murder. When asked if Peter knocking down Stephen could have been deliberate, she told police he had a motive.

The episode then ended with Peter being arrested by Craig Tinker for Stephen’s murder, and he was taken away. Peter had claimed he ran over Stephen to stop him from killing Jenny, after he placed a broken glass bottle up to her throat, but Peter seemingly did not realise that Stephen already had dropped the bottle and let Jenny go when he ran him over and killed him.

But Corrie fans aren’t at all happy with the aftermath and have called out Sally for her actions. @JeanieThePixie tweeted: “It’s not fair of Sally to turn on Peter. She should be grateful to Peter for getting shot of the monster & alerting her when Tim got in touch.”

@Samanth22356123 wrote: “Why is Sally dropping Peter in it!!!!,” as @KirstyCakes3006 added: “Sally is SO flipping annoying my god! She’s literally gone from oh my god thank you Peter to oh my god it’s all your fault I don’t know where Tim is in about 5 seconds flat.”

@Alison_King_Fan tweeted: “Sally saying this after peter has just done all that for her..,” as @WhoPotterVian echoed: “Seriously, can Sally and Gail leave Peter alone already please? It wasn’t murder, it was manslaughter. He was protecting Jenny, for crying out loud!.

It comes as the Peter Barlow actor is set to leave the cobbles after 23 years after becoming the seventh actor to play Ken Barlow’s son in 2000. Asked if he was shocked when he found out that it was Peter who finished off Stephen, Chris said: “It was Iain [MacLeod] the producer who told me and I was not expecting it that’s for sure. But I was pleased and I was keen to see how the story would pan out. When I read it I loved that it kind of came out of nowhere, hopefully, it was not something that the audience was expecting.

“They knew that Peter was angry and was looking for Stephen but although he had tried to beat him up at the flat I don’t think anyone saw that last moment coming until it happened. Peter was one of the few people who was not on the street at that point and then he came out of nowhere.”

And while Peter’s exit appears to be a while off yet, Chris has shared that he was pleased that the end of Stephen has opened up the door for his own character’s exit. “It just came together at the right time,” he said. “I’ve learned a bit more about Peter than I knew before. The more that I know, the more that I see this side of him the more I like him, he’s got a lot of depth and it has been great to explore that.”

Teasing how Peter will eventually leave, the soap favourite added: “Well he has just killed someone so there are so many storylines that can come out of that and so many reasons that he might not be around any more. All I will say is I am delighted with my exit storyline, the scripts are superb and I can’t wait to see the reaction to how Peter leaves the street.”
