Coronation Street star Lisa George responds to exit claims
The Beth Sutherland actress clears up departure rumours.
Coronation Street star Lisa George has responded to claims that she is leaving her role as Beth Sutherland, confirming that she will be sticking around on the cobbles after signing a new contract.
The actress, who joined the soap as Beth in 2011, told The Mirror at the Pride of Britain Awards 2023 that she had been confused by reports in the media that she was leaving the show.
The rumours arose after she answered a question about which shows she’d like to work on if she were to depart from Corrie.
“I’ve got a new contract,” she said, confirming that she will be continuing to play Beth for the foreseeable future. “It’s really weird, everyone was saying, ‘You’re leaving, you’re leaving’.
“I was asked about my contract and I said I was waiting, and so they asked what I’d like to do if I didn’t get one and I said Call The Midwife.”
Explaining that this was just “a passing comment”, the actress added that it was “just weird” that rumours about her leaving sprang from that answer.co
Beth sticking around in Weatherfield will be good news for her husband, Kirk, with George claiming that Beth would “never leave him”.
The star will be absent from scenes airing in this week’s Super Soap Week, however, as George revealed that she had to be cut from planned scenes after she caught Covid-19.
“I got Covid so I got cut from the scenes and so I don’t know the rewrites,” she said. “I don’t know what is going on.
“I was gutted as I really liked the scenes as well, it was Super Soap Week and there was a sudden rush of Covid – we were dropping like flies, and unfortunately I got it as well.”
Earlier this year, the actress opened up about her friendships with her Corrie co-stars, revealing that she still misses former colleague Katie McGlynn, who played Beth’s niece Sinead until the character’s death in 2019.
“I feel that Katie and I had something really special,” George explained. “It sounds weird, but we had a closeness and trust as actors that I’ve not had with anyone else.”
