Forget Jackie, Yellowjackets Season 2’s Big Reveal Just Set Up Natalie As Shauna’s New Enemy

Jackie was originally Shauna’s main rival, but the Yellowjackets season 2 finale revealed that Natalie fits the bill as her next biggest enemy.

Shauna found her biggest rival in her best friend Jackie in Yellowjackets, but one big reveal from the season 2 finale brings an entirely new enemy into her sphere — Natalie. Shauna has always dealt with insecurities and feeling lesser than others, and this was especially true when it came to her relationship with Jackie. Jackie seemed to outshine Shauna in just about every way, save for intelligence, and while the friendship was strained, Shauna was still distraught over Jackie’s death in season 1 and carried that burden of guilt with her for the rest of her life.

The Yellowjackets season 2 finale explained some major mysteries, but one key revelation indicates Natalie will be her next target. Shauna lashed out at several people in the past due to the tragedies that seemed to plague only her. She rebuffed Lottie’s attempts to prepare the others for the birth of her baby, and when her child tragically died she was quick to blame Misty for his death. Lottie let her get her anger out so that she would stop blaming everyone and there would be harmony in the group again. However, it doesn’t look like that’s in the cards for the main characters in Yellowjackets season 3.

Shauna Wasn’t Happy That Natalie Became The Antler Queen In Yellowjackets Season 3

The season 2 finale revealed that Natalie, not Lottie, was Yellowjackets’ antler queen all along. Shauna’s reaction was incredibly telling in terms of what her next story will be. Lottie decided to pass off her leadership duties to Natalie. She chose Natalie because she saw her as the wilderness’ “favorite,” evidenced by the fact that the team tried to kill her, but the wilderness wouldn’t let them. The rest of the team accepted Natalie as their leader, kissing her hand in allegiance, but Shauna wasn’t happy.

Shauna later writes in her journal that she always thought it was Jackie that made her feel invisible, but she feels even less seen now. She contemplates and dwells over why she wasn’t chosen, and clearly feels passed over and unseen. Shauna’s sentiments are somewhat understandable. After all, she’s the one that wields the blade and Natalie didn’t necessarily even believe in the wilderness. Interestingly, her reaction speaks to an old problem she’s had since before the plane crash. Shauna’s insecurities lead to self-destructive decisions that see others getting hurt in the process, and this can only spell trouble for Natalie’s leadership going forward.

What Shauna’s Jealousy Means For Yellowjackets Season 3

It’s quite possible that Shauna’s jealousy could lead to warring factions within the team in Yellowjackets season 3. Shauna has never been afraid of picking a fight with someone who holds more influence than her. She fought with Taissa in season 1 over her plan to disable Allie in their match and even beat Lottie within an inch of her life, despite her celebrated status. Shauna will be a huge obstacle for Natalie going forward, and based on Shauna’s character, it’s all but guaranteed that she’ll try everything in her power to undermine Natalie’s authority.

This could easily lead to the team picking sides. While she feels invisible, Shauna does have her own power within the group. She’s the one that kills and dresses the bodies for consumption, she’s the one that rations the food to ensure the others’ survival, and despite her baby’s death, the others do see her as a maternal figure. The rest of the Yellowjackets team could pick up on these things, and be swayed to Shauna’s side as she attempts to dismantle Natalie’s authority. While warring factions hasn’t been teased on Yellowjackets, there are three more seasons to go, and plenty of stories to be told.
