“I consider that passion”: Henry Cavill’s Comments on “Toxic Fans” is the Proof Netflix Lost the Best Thing About The Witcher Franchise
Henry Cavill welcomes fans to critique his work as he understands it comes from a place of passion rather than toxicity.
Henry Cavill has always shown that he’s capable of nailing any role that comes his way. This was exactly what he proved while portraying the character of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Before the British actor debuted as Geralt, fans of the books doubted if he would pull off the role. Surprisingly, he exceeded all expectations and became a favorite amongst viewers. However, his stint with the famous fantasy series came to an end quickly.
In October 2022, the 41-year-old actor announced via Instagram revealing his abrupt departure from the show and that Liam Hemsworth would be replacing him as Geralt of Rivia. Nobody fully understands why Henry Cavill suddenly decided to leave the show despite his willingness to commit to this specific role for multiple seasons.
Henry Cavill believes that toxic fans are a product of pure passion
After consistently proving that he was arguably the best character on The Witcher, fans weren’t necessarily pleased with Henry Cavill calling it quits after season three.
But as a fan of the books and the video games of The Witcher himself, Cavill fully believes that fans weren’t being toxic but rather passionate about something they genuinely loved. In an interview with Jake Hamilton, Cavill said,

When it comes to fans, it is a fan’s right to have whatever opinion they want to have, and people are going to be upset, especially when we’re talking about books or games because you’re never going to be the exact person they had in their head… I don’t necessarily consider that toxic. I just consider that passion.
This is proof enough to believe that Netflix lost a gem. However, Henry Cavill’s departure wasn’t entirely because of Netflix but it might have been a series of issues that hindered the actor’s ability to commit. One of which may have been his inability to juggle between filming other projects and The Witcher.
Henry Cavill and The Witcher’s writers weren’t on the same page
According to Vulture, there is one issue that arose between Henry Cavill, the producers, and writers of the Netflix hit. Cavill and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, one of the producers of The Witcher have previously acknowledged that the former would often advocate for Geralt to be portrayed similar to how he was in the books, which Andrzej Sapkowski wrote.
A former producer of the show named Beau DeMayo also claimed that several writers who worked with him on the script would often mock versions of the characters portrayed in the books and video games.
Many writers allegedly disliked the books and video games that Cavill is a major fan of. It was also revealed that the Man of Steel actor would make changes to the script and his dialogues without Hissrich’s knowledge.
Alas, nobody will ever fully understand why Cavill’s incredible tenure with the series came to an end. Unfortunately, the British star was also released from his role as Superman from DCEU as well.
