ITV Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver, 60, reveals very simple secret to her 3 stone weight loss

Sue Cleaver has been dubbed ‘unrecognisable’ by Coronation Street fans after she changed her lifestyle to improve her health and lose weight and now she says too much red wine was her biggest crime

Sue Cleaver says the simple secret to her incredible transformation is cutting out the red wine while making dinner.

The soap star, 60, who has played Eileen Grimshaw on the cobbles since 2000, has spoken openly about her weight loss journey over the years and the terrifying health battles that have played a role. She has dropped three stone in the past few years and while there are a number of reasons for it, she credits one subtle lifestyle change for her new look.

Sue explained in an interview with Woman Magazine that after conquering dry January last year, she decided to give up alcohol all together. She says sitting down and doing the maths is so important and talking about her time in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, she said: “I lost 18lb. I’d already lost a stone and a half that year, because I gave up booze.

“I did Dry January and then I decided to carry on. I know it sounds ridiculous at my age, but I never really thought about how many calories I was consuming when I was having a glass of red wine while cooking dinner and then a couple more while eating it. If you’re doing that four or five nights a week, that’s a lot of calories.”

Speaking to Loose Women star Kaye Adams on her How to be 60 podcast, Sue outlined how things god tough when Covid hit. She said: “In the pandemic we all over-did things. I spent a lot of it drinking lots of lovely red wine and I put on a lot of weight doing it. Then I did dry January and I thought. ‘I wonder what life would be like if I stopped completely?”

Earlier this year, Sue appeared on Loose Women to talk about the ‘shame’ and ‘judgement’ she has been exposed to for losing weight, and explained it was largely down to a decline in her health. She said: “My weight has been up, down, all over the place… a lot of it was helped by red wine. At the minute, I am a lot thinner but I’ve been ill this year, and for some reason my metabolism just seems to have changed.”

A few months ago, the actress shut down claims that she used diet gummies to drop pounds after getting falsely embroiled in advertising for weight-loss pills online. She took to Instagram to warn fans: “I’m really, really sad that I have to actually make this video. I’ve had quite a lot of messages over the last couple of weeks asking me about Keto gummies.

“There’s obviously some scam going around saying that I lost weight using Keto gummies… well it’s cr*p. It’s a scam. And if you’ve been taken in by it I’m so, so sorry. It’s outrageous. I just want you to know that I would never, ever advocate anything like that,” the actress fumed.
