The Witcher Stunt Director Praises Henry Cavill and Freya Allan

The third season of The Witcher starring Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan drops on Netflix in less than ten days. The Witcher has been famous for its action scenes from the very beginning, thanks to stunt choreography by professionals like Wolfgang Stegemann and Vladimir Furdik. Season 3 is no different, for Stegemann is not just the stunt director but also the second unit director for the season.

Wolfgang Stegemann praises Henry Cavill and Freya Allan

In a recent interview with UNILAD, Stegemann credits Henry Cavill not just for his impeccable work ethic but also for designing and choreographing the fight sequences with Stegemann and his team.

“Henry [was] like basically my second fight coordinator. So he’s coordinating and choreographing with me together, he is deeply involved in the whole process.“

Stegemann also explained how the Superman actor was ‘deeply involved’ in designing shots, “It’s not just having a fight, it’s how we shoot this fight. Henry and I basically sit together on the monitor, and we hold the cameras and go through the fight to find the right angles, the right movements. And, yeah, it’s incredible.“

Stegemann adds that Cavill, who was injured in Season 2, still went ahead with the complex choreography and did ‘100 %’ of his own stunts on set. “Henry, of course, is performing himself. So, first of all, which was very important to know, I didn’t use any stunt double at all. So, he did all his stunts by himself – like 100 percent, which is very rare, and I’m very proud of because he’s just an incredible performer.“

According to the high-profile stunt choreographer, Cavill, a huge fan of the Witcher books and games, remained committed and continued working with the same passion even as he was gearing up to leave The Witcher.

Stegemann recently expressed his admiration for the actor in his Instagram post too.

In the same interview, Stegemann also expressed his appreciation for Freya Allan, who also performed most of her stunts herself. “She put the same amount of work in, and [was] constantly working hard on the skills. It was then easy for me and my team to design very complex scenes.

So even Freya, we almost didn’t really double her, because she was able to do most of it by herself. Even new techniques, she just collects them and makes them her own […] which you will see in season three. She has way more fights and she looks incredible.“

In a new featurette, Allan expressed her excitement over the fights we’ll see soon in The Witcher Season 3, especially the ones where Ciri and Geralt fight side by side: “I just love the fights! And then getting to do one with Henry, I mean I’ve been waiting for this moment.“

Season 3 of The Witcher is getting ready for a June and July release. The Rats spin-off is currently in production. Stay tuned to Redanian Intelligence and do pop into our Discord server to join in on The Witcher conversation.
