Yellowjackets Season 3 Update Shared By Creator

Co-creator Ashley Lyle shares an update on Yellowjackets season 3 following delays earlier this year due to the onset of the WGA strike.

Yellowjackets co-creator Ashley Lyle provides an update on season 3 following delays. First airing in 2021, the hit Showtime survival drama, which also hails from co-creator Bart Nickerson, chronicles a high school girls soccer team’s attempts to survive following a plane crash in the wilderness. Yellowjacket season 2 was released released earlier this year to mostly strong reviews, but progress on the previously-confirmed season 3 was interrupted by the onset of the WGA strike in May.

Now, while it’s still too early for a Yellowjackets season 3 release date, Lyle provides an update on the new season during a recent Q and A for SAG-AFTRA nomination committee members (via Variety). While not revealing any major story details, she reveals that, after the writers’ strike ended in September, “everybody came back so incredibly enthusiastic, raring to go and creatively invigorated.” Check out Lyle’s additional comments below:

“We’re deep in the writing. We’re having so much fun and are very excited about it.”

What To Expect From Yellowjackets Season 3

While few details have been released regarding the upcoming season, the Yellowjackets season 2 finale provides a fairly strong indication of where things will pick back up with the core group of characters in the 1996 timeline. With tensions running high, things eventually come to a head in the final episode, titled “Storytelling,” with the team’s cabin burning to the ground. Season 3, then, will see the survivors without shelter in the dead of winter, which is sure to test them like never before.

Additional levels of mystery are peeled back with each season, meaning audiences will probably find out more about the evil force affecting goings-on in the woods. One tease that seems ripe for further exploration is Javi’s (Luciano Leroux) cryptic statement regarding his “friend,” who told him not to return to the group. While Javi’s death means he won’t be sharing any more details about this figure, it seems that the survivors aren’t alone in the woods.

It’s currently unclear what Yellowjackets cast members will be returning, but it can be assumed that most major players will be coming back. This includes original cast members Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Sophie Nélisse, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Tawny Cypress, Courtney Eaton, Sarah Desjardins, Steven Krueger, and Warren Kole. Season 2 newcomers like Elijah Wood, Simone Kessell, and Lauren Ambrose also seem likely to return. With writing currently underway, the earliest Yellowjackets season 3 could air is late 2024.
