Some things had better stay in the fans’ imagination.
There are some on-screen couples who have such chemistry that we can only wish to ever experience the love these fictional characters have. However, what tends to intrigue viewers even more is when the characters with the same strong chemistry have never been in a real relationship.
The emotional drama, the one-night stands, the accidental kisses, and a lot of tragic glances are all the things fans need to fall in love with the ship and root for it to become canon. That’s exactly what happened with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler.
After 24 years on the air, fans still feel the same passion between Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni. The only problem is that making Olivia and Elliot canon now would make no sense at all. If anything, it would ruin all the character development they have had over the years.
Now that there is technically nothing stopping either Olivia or Elliot from falling into each other’s arms, viewers hope the writers will avoid it. Everyone loves a bit of a slow burn, but let’s face it: if Elliot had wanted to be with her, he would have done it after he and Kathy broke up. In fact, it would be even more insulting to this character if they got together after her death.
Besides, Olivia Benson is not the kind of woman who deserves to be someone’s second choice.
Throughout the years, the character has been a highly qualified professional and a pretty confident person who knows her worth. Getting together with Elliot, putting up with his controlling behavior, and getting over the idea that he didn’t choose her when it would’ve caused a fight, but waited for the easy way out instead, would be a setback for her.
The woman who has spent her life fighting for women’s safety deserves the respect that fans are not sure Elliot will be able to give her.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit was renewed by CBS for season 25, so there is a big chance that Stabler will be brought back for the big anniversary. Keep an eye out for news and updates about the upcoming release.
